A lot happened while I was ignoring my blog…
A few things happened over the four months since I last updated this blog (tsk!): I went to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa. I spoke at a conference. I caught two tigerfish. I met a number of lions and elephants and buffalo and one very cute giraffe. I bopped all over the East Coast visiting some brand-new family members (and some older ones too). I skied some seriously awesome powder (thank you, Thanksgiving storm!). I went to the Field Museum in Chicago. And, in Denver, I watched the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service pulverize six tons of ivory trinkets, pool cues, carvings, and jewelry in an attempt to deter rampant poaching in Africa. (Last year, poachers killed more than 30,000 elephants. By some estimates, there are only about 400,000 left on the whole continent.) I reported the story for a cool new (for me) venue, Smithsonianmag.com. Read the full story there or on my clips page.
Another cool story I wrote this fall: the world’s most extreme outfitters for Men’s Journal’s website. I interviewed people who raft some of the world’s wildest and most remote rivers, rowers who cross oceans, and businessmen who send (very rich) people into space on a space shuttle. Another fun mode of procrastination: a story on the country’s best views (that you have to earn) for Men’s Journal. And in the January issue of Outside magazine, I have a story on trips that will get you fit—and motivated. Read “Getting Ripped on the Road” here.
